Altitude Madrid is one of the most unique venues on the tennis calendar due to its exceptional elevation. The tournament is played at the Caja Mágica in Park Manzanares, and the city sits at approximately 667 meters (2,188 feet) above sea level — making it the highest-altitude Masters 1000 event on the ATP and WTA tours. At this elevation, the air is noticeably thinner, which causes the ball to travel faster and bounce higher than at sea-level events. Big servers and aggressive baseliners benefit significantly from these conditions, while defensive players who rely on retrieving and grinding find it more difficult to neutralize powerful shots.
Humidity Madrid in late April and early May is warm and relatively dry compared to other European clay events. Average temperatures during tournament week range from 10°C to 22°C (50°F–72°F), with humidity around 45–55% — much drier than Rome, or Roland Garros. The dry air combined with the high altitude makes the ball fly even faster, creating one of the most challenging and exciting environments in clay-court tennis.
Outdoor Tournament The Madrid Open is played entirely outdoors on red clay at the Caja Mágica. The venue has retractable roofs on its three main courts — the Manolo Santana, Arantxa Sánchez, and Butarque stadiums — which means rain delays are rare and play can continue in most weather conditions. This makes Madrid one of the most weather-resistant outdoor clay events on the calendar.
Surface Despite being red clay, Madrid plays significantly faster than Roland Garros or Rome due to the altitude and dry conditions. The high bounce favors tall players and those with heavy topspin, but the extra pace through the air means that flat hitters and big servers have a much better chance here than at lower-altitude clay events.
